Cirkelbroen (The Circle Bridge)

Cirkelbroen (The Circle Bridge)

Cross this architectural masterpiece designed by Olafur Eliasson, featuring five interconnected circular platforms shaped like ship masts.

Spanning the mouth of Christianshavns Kanal, Cirkelbroen (The Circle Bridge) is an extraordinary fusion of practical urban infrastructure and world-class functional art. Designed by the internationally renowned Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and opened in 2015, the bridge is composed of five interconnected, staggering circular platforms of varying sizes. Each circle features a tall, central mast rigged with steel cables, making the entire structure deliberately resemble a cluster of classic sailing ships moored closely together in the harbor.

The brilliant design of Cirkelbroen forces a change of pace. Unlike traditional, straight bridges designed purely for speed and efficiency, the zigzagging path across the circular platforms naturally forces cyclists and pedestrians to slow down. It invites commuters to become observers, encouraging them to pause, lean against the zig-zag railing, and take in the magnificent views of the Black Diamond, the historic Børsen, and the bustling harbor traffic. It transforms a simple harbor crossing into a mindful moment of urban reflection.

At night, Cirkelbroen is subtly illuminated, enhancing its poetic, sculptural qualities against the dark waters. The bridge is a vital part of the continuous 13-kilometer Harbour Ring (Havneringen) route, making it incredibly popular for runners and tourists exploring the waterfront. Experiencing this unique crossing highlights Copenhagen's deep dedication to integrating high-concept, maritime-inspired art directly into the daily lives of its citizens.
