Christianshavns Færgecafé

Step aboard a historic ferry or sit by the canal to enjoy traditional Danish food and homemade aquavit in a truly nautical setting.

For a taste of traditional Danish maritime culture, Christianshavns Færgecafé is an absolute institution along the historic canals. Located at the corner of Strandgade, directly overlooking the Christianshavn canal, this classic restaurant has been serving hungry sailors and locals since 1850. The venue actually consists of two parts: the cozy, historic basement restaurant steeped in nautical antiques, and a beautifully restored old Swedish ferry permanently moored right outside, offering a unique floating dining experience.

The menu at Færgecaféen is a love letter to classic Danish cuisine. It is the perfect place to enjoy authentic, towering open-faced sandwiches (smørrebrød) for lunch, featuring freshly caught herring, roast beef, and perfectly fried fish fillets. However, the restaurant is perhaps most famous for its incredible selection of homemade aquavit (snaps). Crafted by the owner, known locally as the "Aquavit Captain," these infused spirits are an essential part of the traditional Danish maritime dining experience and flow generously throughout the day.

The atmosphere is wonderfully informal, boisterous, and packed with old-school charm. Sitting on the deck of the ferry during a sunny afternoon, watching the small boats navigate the canal while raising a glass of cold aquavit, feels like participating in a piece of living Copenhagen history. Whether you are seeking a hearty, traditional meal or just want to absorb the authentic, salty soul of the district, Christianshavns Færgecafé is a mandatory harbor stop.
